A visual design was developed for my awareness initiative Plus Value Awareness.
This was part of transforming the online awareness projects and presentations.
This is broken into two areas: explorative and distinctions.
Explorative
A flexible visual system is used for the introductory feature & tagline "Higher aspirations" which encourages the audience to start exploring the possibilities of valuing a person with hidden differences while exploring some of the subjects and topics featured on the awareness website.
The concept Is centred around floating triangles filled with different visual shapes within a blend of large curved background shapes. Any aspects of this concept are designed to be flexible and adaptable when required, including modified use of background colours, and the visual images can be used separately to emphasise specific subjects and topics.
There is a variation of this concept where the visual distinctions to emphasise focus areas of hidden differences and diverse groups are also incorporated. (See below for details). This is specifically used for the lowdown of hidden differences and to encourage to think and approach the human aspects rather than the difficulties and perceptions.
Extract from this feature is also used as part of social media posts and stories within a family of templates.
Distinctions
The new design system is used to merge existing online features into one integrated feature while developing consistent standards and design distinctions. The presentation is used for a variety of purposes including understanding information, statistics and customised person of projects and campaigns featured on the Plus Value Awareness website.
The aim is to create some visual distinctions without using the traditional approach. Previously, I used colour coding to identify content for specific areas of hidden differences (a term used for describing specific neurological-related difficulties which are mostly hidden along with social anxiety). This includes Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Social Anxiety. Also, this is being used for specific diverse groups, including women with hidden differences, Multicultural people with hidden differences, Neurodiversity, and invisible disabilities, along with a general version for hidden differences. This approach was becoming a problem as it can cause a negative stigma and can be very offensive.
I chose to use a different approach to develop visual distinctions without using colour coding as this approach is now discouraged.
This involves creating a series of different visual shapes and effects; however, this was done with the restrictions of using the main presentation colours purple and warm yellow. This design system is used in a variety of ways. Primarily, it is used for the integrated feature Awareness Focus feature with extracts presented as social media posts & Stories. Also, this is used for specialised versions of specific online projects with customised information for Focus areas of hidden differences and diverse groups.
The implementation of a new design system is being rolled out on a gradual basis. Also, further development is planned to expand certain aspects of the design visual language used for the awareness website and social media.
